How to Donate

What type of donations do you accept?

We generally accept the following gently used items:  Books, media including: DVDs, CDs, audio books on CD, and video games.

At this time, we are NOT accepting DVDs.

We are unable to accept: moldy, wet, torn, yellowed or damaged books; encyclopedias; out-of-date textbooks or computer books (2019 and older); VHS tapes; Books on Tape and cassettes; Newspapers, magazines and pamphlets; Library discards– other than Children’s, Young Adult, & Large Print.

Where do I take my donations?

Please help by following these guidelines for donations: All books need to be in good, re-sellable condition. Books should be clean with no tears, broken spines, missing pages, etc. Donations of 1-2 bags or boxes per visit can be made at most LBPL neighborhood libraries. Larger Donations?  Take the boxes to our Billy Jean King Main Library. Often there is 20-minute parking available in front of the library. Ask at the check-out desk to borrow a cart for your donations. Or you can email us at [email protected] for other suggestions.

Why are you so particular about free materials?

The time to go through donated materials to evaluate and process materials and the allocation of space for storage of items is considerable. Ask yourself before you donate – would you purchase that book or item at a used book store? Most donations are sold in the Bookshop at BJK Main Library or the Friends' book sales rack at neighborhood libraries.

Can I get a receipt for my donation?

Of course!  All donated items are tax-deductible, and a receipt will be provided upon request.

How are the book sale proceeds used?

All proceeds are used to support our Long Beach libraries with new materials including books, media, and program supplies. Membership dues and donations also support summer reading programs, provide cultural and literary events for community, and fund training for library staff.
